Agate is one of those stones that most jewelry makers take for granted. It is everywhere, it is affordable, and it comes in every color imaginable. But that familiarity is exactly why it deserves a closer look.

The bead market is full of agate that is dyed, treated, or not agate at all. Prices vary wildly. Names get used loosely. And customers who buy finished jewelry deserve to know what they are actually wearing. This guide is written for people who make jewelry seriously — whether you sell at markets, run an online shop, or design custom pieces for clients.

Start Here — What Agate Actually Is

Agate belongs to the chalcedony family, which is a variety of quartz. What separates agate from plain chalcedony is banding — the concentric rings or parallel layers of color that form as silica-rich water slowly deposits minerals inside cavities in volcanic rock over thousands of years.

Those bands are not decoration. They are a record of how the stone formed, one thin layer at a time. In a well-cut bead, you can hold it up to a light and see the layering. That translucency — the way light passes through the outer layers and softens at the center — is one of agate's defining characteristics and something no glass imitation fully replicates.

India and Brazil supply most of the world's commercial agate beads. India's Cambay region in Gujarat has been cutting and polishing agate for over four thousand years. Brazil produces enormous volumes of raw agate, much of which is processed and dyed before being sold into the global bead market. Both sources produce good material. Knowing which you are buying matters because they behave differently and suit different designs.

The hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale makes agate genuinely practical for everyday jewelry. It handles bracelets and necklaces worn regularly without scratching easily. The complete absence of cleavage — the tendency some stones have to split along internal planes — means agate chips rather than splits, which is a real advantage in beads that get knocked around in a jewelry box.


The Dyed Agate Question — Let's Be Direct About This

Natural agate comes in gray, white, brown, red, orange, and occasionally pale blue or green. It does not come in electric blue, vivid purple, neon green, or jet black — at least not in any volume that would supply the global bead market.

The bright, saturated colors on most commercially sold agate beads come from dye. This has been happening for centuries — ancient craftspeople used plant-based and mineral solutions to color agate long before synthetic dyes existed. Today, chemical dyes are used. The stone's natural porosity means it absorbs color readily, and the results can be vivid and long-lasting.

None of this makes dyed agate a bad product. Plenty of jewelry makers use dyed agate intentionally and produce beautiful work with it. The problem is when it is sold as natural without disclosure, or when customers are led to believe the color is something the earth produced. That is a misrepresentation — and one that comes back to the jewelry maker when customers start asking questions.

Simple test: Hold the bead up to a strong light source. In dyed agate, the dye is often concentrated in surface cracks, drill holes, and along banding lines — you can sometimes see where the color sits on top rather than through the stone. Natural agate color is distributed evenly through the material. This is not a definitive test, but it is a useful starting point.

The Varieties Worth Knowing

There are dozens of named agate varieties. These are the ones that come up most often in the bead market and the ones where the differences genuinely matter for design decisions.

Botswana Agate
Comes from Botswana and has some of the finest natural banding of any agate variety — closely spaced bands in pale pink, gray, white, and sometimes lavender. It is not typically dyed. The subtle, elegant patterning suits understated designs and pairs beautifully with sterling silver.
Mined primarily in Namibia and South Africa. Pale blue with fine white banding — one of the few agate varieties where the blue color is genuinely natural. The color is soft and cool, nothing like the saturated blue of dyed Brazilian agate. Widely used in feminine and bridal jewelry designs.
Technically a chalcedony with mineral inclusions rather than banded agate — but sold under the agate name universally. The green, brown, or black inclusions that look like moss or foliage trapped inside a translucent stone are iron or manganese oxide. Widely sourced from India. Works well in nature-inspired and earthy designs.
Crazy Lace Agate
From Mexico. The banding is irregular and complex — swirling patterns in red, orange, yellow, and cream rather than the orderly concentric rings of classic agate. Bold and visually busy, it suits statement jewelry where the stone is intended to dominate the design.
Fire Agate
A rare variety from Mexico and the American Southwest. Thin layers of iron oxide beneath the surface produce iridescent flash — red, orange, green — when light hits the stone at certain angles. Genuine fire agate commands significantly higher prices than standard varieties and is rarely seen in mass-produced bead strands at low prices.
Sardonyx
Alternating bands of sard (reddish-brown) and onyx (black or white). One of the oldest recorded gem materials — Romans used it extensively for seal rings and cameos. Available in bead form and particularly well suited to bold, graphic jewelry designs.

Which Bead Shape for Which Design

Shape affects more than just appearance — it affects how banding is displayed, how the bead sits on a strand, and how it interacts with light.

Round beads are the workhorse of the agate bead range. The curved surface shows banding evenly from multiple angles. They sit well on stringing material and work in virtually every design context. For anyone starting with agate, rounds in the 6mm to 10mm range cover the widest range of applications.

Faceted rounds and rondelles add a dimension that plain agate cannot provide — light reflection. The flat facets catch and bounce light, making the bead feel more dynamic. Faceted agate beads work particularly well in layered necklaces and mixed-stone designs where you want the agate to participate visually rather than sit quietly in the background.

Slab and slice beads are cross-sections cut through the stone to reveal the complete banding pattern. A well-cut agate slab showing full concentric rings is genuinely striking as a pendant or focal bead. These are thinner and more delicate than standard beads and are best used in designs where they are not going to take regular impact.

Chip beads are the most affordable entry point. The irregular shapes and varied sizes give finished pieces a raw, organic quality that more uniform bead forms cannot produce. Agate chip beads work well in casual layered necklaces, especially when mixed with wood, lava stone, or freshwater pearls.


What Good Quality Looks Like

Most agate quality problems are visible before you string a single bead. These are the things worth checking on every strand before it goes into production.

Run your fingers along the surface of several beads. Well-finished agate feels consistently smooth — no rough patches, no flat spots where the polishing stopped. Uneven polishing usually means lower-grade finishing and often signals that other quality controls were similarly relaxed.

Look at the drill holes from both ends. A centered, clean hole on both sides indicates careful drilling. A hole that enters cleanly on one side but exits off-center or with chipping on the other end is a problem that will show in finished pieces and wear out stringing material faster. This is worth checking on every strand, not just the first bead.

Hold a selection of beads from different positions on the strand up to a light source together. Color should be reasonably consistent throughout. Natural stone will always have some variation — that is normal and expected. What to avoid is a strand where beads at one end are clearly different in color or pattern from beads at the other end, which indicates mixed-grade material.

On banding: If you are specifically buying a variety marketed for its banding — Botswana agate, blue lace agate, crazy lace agate — the banding should be clearly visible. A strand where most beads show no visible banding at all is either very low grade or may not be the variety it is labeled as.

Labradorite - The iridescent flash of labradorite creates strong contrast against agate's quieter, matte surface. Particularly effective with gray or neutral-toned agate.
Freshwater Pearl - Pearl's soft organic luster and agate's waxy surface share a similar quality. Together they produce a clean, natural look without competing for attention.
Lapis Lazuli - Deep, saturated blue against neutral agate tones. A combination with a long history in decorative jewelry that still works in contemporary designs.
Citrine - Warm yellow citrine against brown, red, or crazy lace agate creates color contrast without clashing. Works particularly well in autumn-inspired designs.
Amazonite - Blue-green amazonite alongside moss agate or gray agate suits earthy, nature-inspired designs. Both stones share a similar calm visual weight.
Black Onyx - Both are chalcedony varieties with identical surface quality and similar weight. They sit together naturally on a strand and produce clean two-tone contrast.

Looking After Agate Jewelry

Agate is one of the easier stones to care for. Warm water and a small drop of mild soap, a soft brush, a thorough rinse, and complete drying before storage — that covers routine cleaning for the vast majority of pieces.

The one exception is dyed agate. Ultrasonic cleaners can draw dye out of the stone, particularly if the dye has not fully penetrated. For dyed pieces, hand cleaning only. Similarly, keep dyed agate away from perfume, hairspray, and household cleaning products — not because these will damage the stone itself, but because they can affect the dye and cause uneven fading over time.

Store agate away from direct sunlight. Prolonged UV exposure gradually fades dyed material. A fabric-lined box or individual pouches are sufficient — the main goal is preventing contact with harder stones that would scratch the surface over time.

  • Is this material dyed, stabilized, or natural? Get a straight answer — not a deflection.
  • Where does this material come from? India and Brazil produce meaningfully different agate. Knowing the origin sets accurate expectations about color range and banding character.
  • What is the actual size tolerance on this strand? A bead labeled 8mm may range from 7.5 to 8.5mm. For designs where consistency matters, confirm the real tolerance.
  • Can you send a photo in natural daylight? Studio lighting and post-processing make colors look different from what arrives. Natural light photographs are a more honest representation.
  • What happens if the material does not match the product listing? A supplier who cannot answer this clearly is one to approach carefully.
